Ingredients
  

Bread and Filling

  • 4 slices thick bread
  • 1 cup cooked sliced chicken
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese fresh cheese for better melting

Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • a pinch nutmeg

Instructions
 

Cooking Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F.
  • Melt butter in a saucepan, add flour, and stir.
  • Gradually whisk in milk, then add salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Cook until thick.
  • Lightly toast bread and place in baking dish.
  • Layer chicken and cheese between bread slices.
  • Spoon sauce over top and sprinkle remaining cheese.
  • Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until golden and bubbling.
  • Let rest briefly, then serve.

Notes

Do not overbake to keep it moist.
